I think this site is marvellous. I recently bought some fish which I believe to be Danio or Devario species. Hopefully I will be able to indentify them with the help of this site. I will keep you posted if I do do.

Comment: Here is how I breed Celestichthys margaritatus. I tried the mesh on the bottom of the tank waiting a week and then siphonig off the bottom. I got like 4 - 6 fry a week this way. Everyone told me that the margies will eat their eggs as fast as they lay them. So being a killifish breeder, I decided to try another method. I put a group of 12 in a 10 gallon tank. Took a piece of java moss that filled the center of the tank. Left them in the tank and after a week I pulled the javamoss out and put it into a 2 1/2 gallon tank. In a few days fry started appearing left and right. I used two piece of java moss and alternated them every week. I was getting between 20 - 40 fry a week. I have since rested the breeders but I am getting ready to fire them uo again.

Comment: Hi Pete, Great site lots of info, I tried breeding some spices, by your standard method, I tried with no luck, Divario pathirana and Danio feeradei, but I had good success with Danio shanensis and D sp burma, today I'm trying to spawn a fish which looks much like you Davario sp giraffe. without this site things would take a lot longer, I do hope that people do try to breed these lovely fish, to make them a bit easier to find.

Comment: Hi! I have recently gotten very interessted in Microrasbora.
Boraras Brigittae, Microrasbora Kubotai and Microrasbora erythromicron. I am not sure if Galaxy Rasbora fits in here but they have just aquired some in my local pet-stoore and theese little fellows cought my eyes too.

Now I wonder if I could get any of theese fish for my aquarium?
My aquarium is a 200 liters well planted one, but the "problem" is that it is populated by a shoal of 15 Tigerbarbs.

Would small rasbora like the Kubotai or Galaxy or any of the above, get eaten alive by the Tigerbarbs or do theese fish work well togeather?

I must add that my Tigers are very young and small, the biggest being maybe 4 centimeters.

Thanks

Comment: Nice little site. I adopted 8 Zebras and 6 red Glofishes within the last week and I'm really glad I'm using them as a starter fish because they're soo spontaneous in the water. They hide a lot behind my drift wood and live plants but when I sit still they come around the front to play and tease each other.

I have just received a bunch of Devario assamensis, and will be very interested in what ever information that will come on this specis.
I see you have Celestichtus margaritatus in the top right corner. Do you considder this belonging to the group or is it represented as you keep this too? I have some of them, and they are easily bread. Very nice.

Comment: Interesting reading on the water change when conditioning. I have a celestichthys specie aquarium and came to the same conclusion when doing a full "fresh" change, the colour just dropped from them despite near same parameters, etc. I deliberately (but keeping an eye on the behaviour) left an extra week or so before changing and discovered a few fry when about change the water after two and half weeks. Perhaps they prefer slightly more worn water.

Comment: Lovely site and I am pleased to refer to it on my website www.vijvervisinfo.net
I currently keep some D. rerio and a single D. kyathit outdoors. The conditions are extreme in most aquariumkeepers eyes, but appear suitable nevertheless: daytime (water) temperature of 20-25 degrees centigrade, nighttime temperature of 15 degrees, some nights dropping to a bitter cold 10 degrees. The fish are fascinating because their behaviour switches instantly between schoaling and territorial, depending on many factors (amongst others disturbance by me causes shoaling, quietness and higher temperatures seem to cause territoriality). At the coldest temperature they become quiet and hide in the vegetation. I frequently observe egg laying but as I have no intention of breeding I let the eggs being eaten by the fish. Soon the temperature in my region will drop and the fish will have to move back indoors. I think that these fish should NEVER be released outside of their native range: they are far too adaptable and could easily become a problem for native fish species.

Comment: I have not found so many different Danios in the United States. Do you know of breeders in the USA I could contact to obtain breeding stock of some of these. (I will b e contacting some who signed your guest book.)While I mainly breed show Bettas I find many of the danios shown on this site as ones that I would like to see more widely available in the USA. I am president of the Georgia Betta Breeders Association. Any help you can give in locating persons in the USA with breeding stock for Danios would be appreciated. Lacking that I might be willing to import if it is not too costly. I am a retired (75 years old) college minister.

Comment: Many danios and other tropical species come from the very areas hit by the Tsunami of 12/2004. These people are still suffering terrible hardship. Have many ornamental fish farms survived this disaster? Certainly not all.
There are many organizations you can still find providing releif to this area. As a tropical fish keeper, I feel a certain relationship with these people and this area. I hope you do too.

Comment: Great info on some neglected species! I have personally caught Devario Regina,Danio kerri,Danio albolineatus and a different more yellowish colour morph? of the latter on Koh Samui in Thailand! I have also bred Danio kyathit and Danio nigrofasciatus and I currently have 10 Danio choprae in my hotel-room! Together with Rasboras and Bettas they are my favorite fishes! Keep up the goos work!

Comment: One of six Zebras I purchased recently turned out not to be a Zebra at all - can you help in identifying it and hopefully finding some additional ones to keep it company? Pictures can be found on my site forum here: http://dpnow.com/bb/others.pl?frames=n;read=830

It's rather shy and tends to only come out of hiding in the plants when the main tank light goes off in the evening.

If anyone can help, you could make one fish a lot less lonely!

Comment: Danio Fire Ring is a rather odd name for Danio kyathit. It is usually applied to the striped version (ocelot being used normally for the spotted version)

The name apparently comes from the fiery red colour that can be seen under certain light conditions in the eye around the pupil. A more common name for striped kyathit is orange finned zebra danio

Comment: I saw several danios I didn't know existed. I actually came to see if I could find out information on pink striped danios & fire ring danios. I wanted to find information to assure me that they aren't dyed, injected, or painted. Even though I didn't, you have some amazing pictures. Thanks much.

Comment: I am surprised that Malaysia was never mention as a place of origin for some of the Danios I have positively identified in your site.
I can actually catch them wild quite easily in streams near my home.
Will gladly show anyone where these streams are located if anyone of you come to this part of the world.

Comment: Thanks for this site - with the recent influx of Danio and Devario, its been hard to find any identifying information, but this is very helpful. I'm going to try to breed the "Gold Ring Danios" I purchased that were supposedly imported from India. These are most likely Devarios, as the barbels are difficult to see on all but the dominant (largest) female. These fish, all full grown now, are only 1" to 1.25", and of a slim build. Lovely fish, I'd like to get more, but with the naming confusion, I doubt it would actually be the same fish.

Thanks for the very needed site!

A database showing where people might get hold of some of these rarer danios. I currently keep kyathit, but have been trying without success to get hold of sp. 'Burma' for almost a year.
