Chela cachius

Chela cachius Hamilton 1822
Common Name:Neon hatchet fish.
Scientific Name:Chela cachius
Origin:Asia: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh
Size:Grows to around 6cm.
Comments:In spite of its common name, this species is seemingly a plain silver fish. When viewed in sunlight however, the colours become much more apparent. Rarely seen in the UK although some were imported in May 2006 from India. No reports of breeding but I would expect it to spawn in a similar manner to Danionins. Has been introduced for mosquito control. Excellent 'jumper' so a well fitting lid is essential. Chela atpar is a synonym of this species.
